Description

The U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) released the Gender Equity and Equality Action (GEEA) Fund 2024 Progress Report in December, 2024. The GEEA Fund aims to increase women’s and girls’ access to resources, services, and leadership opportunities and address barriers that limit their full participation in the economy. In FY 2023, GEEA-funded programs reached 686,000 individuals in 87 countries, strengthening women’s land rights, closing the gender digital divide, increasing women’s employment, and promoting women’s entrepreneurship around the world.

GEEA Fund activities advance implementation of the Women's Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment (WEEE) Act of 2018 (Public Law 115-428) and the U.S. Strategy on Global Women’s Economic Security. Since its inception in 2021, the GEEA Fund has invested $300 million in direct resources. An additional $200 million in attributed indirect FY 2022 and FY 2023 funding, managed by USAID and Department of State operating units, further advances women’s economic security.

In FY 2023, GEEA-funded programs advanced women’s entrepreneurial skills by supporting over 18,000 women to expand their entrepreneurial and digital skills, labor rights, and employment opportunities, and 1,900 women-owned microenterprises to access loans, bank accounts, and other services and by assisting over 26,000 women to receive legally recognized and documented land or marine tenure rights. Nearly 23,000 women participated in GEEA Fund-supported food security programs that promoted and increased women’s production, processing, sales, and income in the agri-food sector. In addition, GEEA Fund activities increased women’s access to well-paying jobs by training 5,000 women in technical and leadership skills, and coaching leaders of private sector companies to advance women’s empowerment across their organizations.
