Addressing GBV through Water Security, Sanitation, and Hygiene Programs

Understand why USAID's water security, sanitation, and hygiene (WSSH) programs should integrate programming to address gender-based violence (GBV) and learn specific strategies to accomplish this.

Description

This document describes why and how USAID's water security, sanitation, and hygiene (WSSH) programs should integrate programming to address gender-based violence (GBV). For example, water infrastructure and development can increase gender-based violence for women due to the influx of male workers. Additionally, men hold the majority of leadership positions with water programming due to technical knowledge, while women are less likely to be incorporated in positions of leadership - despite a multi-country study that found women's participation in key water leadership committee positions to be a significant predictor of sustainable water systems.
